Just joined the forum, wish I had done earlier and picked up the tip regarding lower gun deck cannons as related by Dave 1254 ! Now I know what "Wallpapering the hallway through the letter box" really means !! My experience resulted in retro fitting additional barrel support through the gun port ! not to be recommended, but we got there in the end. Interesting comment regradong the finish to the upper deck planking, I also wanted the contrast between a wood looking hull and a litem well used deck. I used very fine sandpaper first, the holystoned. After a couple of coats of Admiralty Matt varnish, the finish is just what I wanted. I have attached a piccy taken before final finishing. Just fitted the rigging stay chains to the shingles, a few lessons to be learnt there ! Replaced the black soft copper links supplied with the kit, due to them coming apart. with proper linked copper chain, much better effect. Hull will be laid up now until next winter, but on rainey days Im sure I can find something to do. Mike ![]() ![]() ![]()

Decided to make up the hull deadeyes before hand, then realised: All the measurement and lines had to be spot on, the relationship of the height of the bulwark above the finished deck level, which decided the marking out of the lower deck gun ports, and hence the position of the rubbing strakes, to which the rigging shingles were attached. Quickly found out that the kit supplied deadeye strops, coupled with the links supplied did not give one any flexibility if Any of the earlier steps were out by a gnats whisker. Replaced the strops supplied with .5 rigging rope painted black, and attached 2 mm brass chain between the deadeye and the chain plate, much better!!! Additionally? Drill the shingles to 3.5 mm not. 3 mm as specified, makes it much easier to thread the chain plate through without putting too much strain on the chain itself, makes for a better finish in my opinion, or one can paint the chain and plate black.![]()

As you can see from the pics,I have finished planked (1st planking) the hull. I am now working on cutting out and sizing the lower gun ports for 32 pound cannons. I made careful consideration to aligning the ports to be directly between the ports above. The plans shift them slightly so as they do not interfer with the bulkheads. Also as mentioned before the ports are designed around Mantua's one size fits all. So I changed this to reflect the correct cannon size. The hull weas sanded, filled and then sanded again. I kept doing this until it was smooth and when the finished planking was put on there was no chance of the planks not adherring. I will finish cutting out the ports file them to a size and then line them to the finished size. At which point I will paint then red. ![]() ![]() ![]()

My wife recently purchased me the "Seventy Four Gun Ship" by Boudroit, a four volume set which (if you are not already familiary) has almost a thousand pages of the most amazing detail/scaled plans/ and plates on every aspect imaginable. If you need any reference pages, I would be happy to scan them to you. I am following along with interest. All the best, Gary

Because the ship was a 74 I figured the basic structure of the ship would be the same as any other 74built in that class, just the finishing details would be different for each ship. I have since acquired the draughts of the Superbe and I was correct. Using the books we could discuss aspects of the building to help one another out. I always need a fresh idea and sometimes ( at least lately) it's slow in comi ng. Dave [ Edited Thu Jul 03 2014, 08:21pm ]

As I think you know, I have the Rattler (rigging), Eagle (frame stage), Essex (lofted), and now Peacock (lofting) in front of it.... That being said, I am happy to bounce ideas. My wife found the books several months ago in a local used book store, in mint condition, dust jackets and all. They were $200 for the entire set, which I believe to be an absolute steel! (I am never that lucky). They are easily one of my most prized possesions. For those of you who have not seen this series, its worth the search. Happy Fourth!
