Frankly, I like the notched building jig much better, perhaps because that's the style I've used all my life. The biggest problem I experienced with the gantry jig is keeping the model perfectly upright (there's nothing supporting the outside frames of the model), and I found myself constantly checking the vertical measurements of the top timbers and adjusting its level almost to the point of obsession. On the Great Republic, the keel only had a quarter inch depth below the frames, so there wasn't a really good way to secure the keel on the baseboard all that well. Perhaps with a greater keel depth the gantry jig might be more suitable, because it could more easily be secured to the baseboard. Gene | ||
