I like the way you approached the rigging, seizing, crows feet, etc. I took the route of the practicum on these and made it far too simplistic. But on my next ship... G

I'm bouncing between 3 different books, 3 different set of plans, and reading as many build logs as I can absorb just to get an idea of what I'm suppose to do....and I still get things wrong. I know it's not perfect by a long stretch, but hopefully it looks good to the general public's eye. I just keep plugging along. 8-) Jonathan

This part of the ship is certainly more complex than I originally gave credit. You will note that I am using color coded clips to identify various running rigging on both sides of the ship as I begin to secure the lines. I saw this on another log - sorry, I cant remember who's... At any rate, the color coded clips allow you to organize your rigging and then tension equally as you pull everything together. Still to go are the mizzen backstays, the crossjack running rigging and then dressing the lines. Oh, and then there is the topgallant shrouds. I am replacing the ones I put on almost two years ago because the line has already faded very badly. I will never use a Sharpie to color rigging again - this was a recommendation from the practicum which I think should be changed. Boot polish and inks are a much better choice as shared by others from this forum. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Have just started rigging the yards off-ship on my Rattler your pics reinforce why it was a good decision.

For consideration: The practicum instructs you to use a small brass pin affix and then glue the spars/yards to the mast. I did this with the main and fore, but not the mizzen. I don't think there is any benefit to affixing the spars/yards permanently - simply put, its a waste of valuable modeling time... The parrell, truss ropes, uphauls and braces do this job nicely on the model as they do on the real ship. Plus, you have the added benefit of being able to tweak the angles and are less likely to break something if it gets snagged. The other big learning point was to make sure I had enough line to rig the entire ship. I didn't. I must have used three different brands of thread when making my own rope. The diameters and colors are slightly different in areas that they should not. This is really only visible to the trained eye, but its an easy thing to prevent if you plan well ahead. You will absolutely need more line than is provided in the kit if you rig it per the practicum. You will always need more line than you think... Just my two cents. I plan on making my own. Any thoughts on this? I will take some better photos soon. I do all my work at night and need better lighting... Thanks, G ![]() ![]() ![]()

The Mamoli kit came with only one color miniature rope - "tan" and it was evident that the builder was suppose to stain it black or dark brown themselves. I choose not to do that but to use Syren's rope, because I didn't know how to stain rope and following Bob Hunt's instructions to use a Sharpie, had disastrous result for you. As I type this I too have run out of line and have to wait until my next shipment arrives next week. I may be more expensive, but the results are nice. It's my feeling, and I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I would guess that rope was constantly being replaced on working ships so there must have been visual variations on the different manufacturers and ages of rope used. I wouldn't worry, you only made your model more realistic. Thanks for the tip on using, or should I say not using pins for the yards. I'll keep that in mind when I get there No tips on the flags since I haven't made any other than cutting out paper flags and gluing onto a line (Evergreen). I did see something some where of laminating aluminum foil in between the front and backside of the flag so you could shape the wind folds. As for the carving, I never carved anything before this model. I started with the "easy" stuff first, the "wolves" on the bow decoration and worked my way up. I'd practice on some scrap wood and take it one step at a time. There are a number of tutorials out there on how to carve. Good Luck! Jon
