You may want to discuss the color scheme with the owner and point out the "usual and customary clipper color schemes", just from a historical perspective.

Somewhere on one of these forums I read an entry from a guy who does these restorations on a regular basis; his advice, which I took, was to ask the client what he wanted the finished product to look like. The problem is that the client doesn't always know what they want. You have to lead. The other interesting aspect is that while the client adores this model, you and I recognize that it's hardly museum quality and would never build it the way it is. So, how much do I try to correct, and how much to leave alone? Tom

I crafted one royal yardarm, 2 mast caps and one mast top, and painted the whole assembly: ![]() The hull just needs painting: ![]()

The really difficult part was the stripe along the hull. It's in a groove whose edges are not well defined which makes placing masking tape a very difficult exercise. I think I've gotten it pretty good; I might have a go at touch up later. Anyway, on deck I've rebuilt the two pin rails around the mast, largely using the original wood; created a round skylight ahead of the steering station; and replaced a series of eyes that served as deadeyes for the shrouds. I used 2mm and 3mm deadeyes from Cornwall. I think they look in scale. ![]() ![]()

You'll notice that there are no deadeye assemblies for the upper shrouds. My source, Harold Underhill, says it was a common practice. They weren't on the original, so I followed suit.
