The USS Essex and the Birth of the American Navy, by Robotti and Vescovi ISBN: 1-59337-192-6. I picked up a soft bound copy on Amazon for $3.66 including shipping! It was a wonderful read. Read more like a novel than a history book and really captured the essence of the birth of the navy with an obvious focus on the Essex. There was great detail on the subscription process, captains as well as the armament of the Essex and the various battles fought. It really brought to life the strategy (or lack thereof) of carronades vs. Long guns on the Essex, as well as the details on how a ship is fitted out. I fully recommend this book to any and all who have a general interest in the subject. Best, G | ||
