I advised the chap that I would post his question to you rather than him going through the trouble of creating an account for the purpose of asking one question. If he wishes to follow up with more questions then he can certainly create an account. Dear EdT In "Part 7 - The Bow Structure" you specify on a difference in a height upper deck before and after a nasal partition (forecastle bulkhead). "...The small, decked area in the above picture is actually at a level above the upper deck in the forecastle and the heavy cat beam across the top of the forecastle bulkhead actually is higher than the forecastle deck. This seemed quite unusual and confusing..." Do you know reason of it ? On a web-site http://serikoff.ucoz.ru/ we long argue on this occasion. In Anatomy upper deck proceeds after a nasal septum on one height. And on a photo from Portsmouth nasal part of deck - at the level of grate. Some consider that a deck it was heaved up later 1805 year...after 1925 for comfort of tourists. Konstantin

These are the athwartship beams that are supported on the head rails. They set the height of the gratings at the head and also the small decked area infront of the forward bulkhead. I am sure they wanter all this external decked area to be at one level, so since it is supported by the head beams, it had to be higher than the upper deck. To make the head rails lower just to keep this small deck at the height of the inside deck would not have been justified due to the distortions and perhaps interferences it would cause with the head structure which would needed to be lower. Hope this helps. Winston, thanks for going to the trouble of posting this on the log. Ed
