There seem to be a preponderance of the Connie builders on that site. The link to my full build is http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/5514-uss-constitution-by-bill-robnbill-mamoli-193-1991-kit/ Anyway, to bring you up to speed, I was given the Mamoli USS Constitution as a Christmas gift in 1991. I started working on the hull and got as far as the outer hull double planking before life got in the way. At some point, I carefully packed everything up and forgot about it. In the intervening years, my tool shop and my skills have grown considerably. After my project ended in November last year, I have been retired. In January, I decide to break out the kit again to see where I left it. Luckily, the boxes survived storage and a move and the ship was still in exactly the shape I left it in two decades ago. I did a thorough review of where I stood with the plans and started back in on the ship. Basically I had to start with planking the deck and everything above it. The quarter galleries were not install nor was any f the detailing on the stern or bow. Since January, I have based the kit a bit. I modified the bow and stern details to be in line with the ship as it sits in Boston Harbor now. I also decide to fully rig the carronades and chase Cannon on the Spar deck. The original kit only supplied breeching line. I also decided to build the ship's boats POF using the Anatomy of a Ship plans. I also modified the deck furniture a bit from the Mamoli plans since I did not like their fittings, or in the case of the binnacles, there were none in the plan so I built them. I will post a series of photos here to bring the build up to date. I currently have completed the spars so I am diving into the rigging. There are a number of open questions regarding the rigging that I am working through with others that have build the ship before or are familiar with it. These include how the futtock shrouds are attached. Currently the ship has Bentinck shrouds. Historically, that might not have been the case. The AOS and Petersson books tend to point toward Cartharpins. Anyway, all fun. If you want details of any of these builds, ask or pop over to my log on MSW. The first two photos show the ship with the hull planking being done. The one where it is stilling in the keel clamps is exactly the shape she was in when packed up. I did not like some of the fittings or choices the Mamoli designers chose so I modified them. I also chose to fully rig the cannon. The Mamoli kit only had the breeching cables. I ordered the additional rope and blocks from Chuck at Syren Ship Model Co. One note, the cannon pictured with the penny was a test configuration. The lines are coiled in the final configuration. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I decided to use the AOS to create a PoF version. I also made all of the fittings for the boat. I completed the 34' host which is mounted to the deck the remaining three will be completed after I work on the rigging since they are outboard and hanging off davits. FYI, one of these photos shows the kit's ship boat blank sitting on the cradles on the deck. I much prefer the final version I made. I also ran out of canon balls. I ended up buying chrome ball bearings and using blackenit to darken them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

My plan is to not glue the masts in but to use the rigging to hold everything in place. In the photos with the masts in place on the ship, they are just stuck in the holes. The photos of the completed spars do not show up very well since they are black and are on the butcher paper I used when painting them. So this brings my log up to speed. Again if you want the details of any of this, my log is on MSW. The link is in the first message of this thread. You do have to be a member of the forum to see the photos but you can ready the text without being one. Bill ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Much more work building your own, a mini project on it's on merit, but much better and more in line with the rest of the model. Thanks

I solved this by taking my torch and briefly getting each one up to glowing red. That seemed to take care of the coatings and they blacken well after that.
