I picked this one because I quite like the schooner shape, the hull shape and colouring, and it has a kinda cool story. Hoping to upload work in progress as I go and create a thorough build log that might be useful for others. It will also be a good sounding board to seek advice if (and when) I get stuck. Which if the incredibly vague Italian instructions are anything to go by, will be often. I've invested in some decent tools as I'm hoping this will be the first of a few builds. I'm taking my time as I'm a perfectionist. But other than that, I'm about as green as you can get. Enjoy.

You could park a truck between some of those bulkheads so I inserted two additional pairs in the middle. After shaping the nose, the decks have been fitted and are pretty level as far as I can tell. ![]() ![]() ![]()

My fiancé didn't exactly appreciate my 'deck the hulls' comment. Debated whether to caulk the planks or stagger shorter lengths but figured a) it's my first build so K.I.S.S. and b) given it's a reasonably modern ship, it can get away with that cleaner look. The deck planks have been shaped exactly to the underlying deck. ![]() ![]() [ Edited Mon Jan 05 2015, 06:47am ]

Came up a treat, though the first coat did turn one smidgy bit of PVA a yellowish tinge. Can't see it after four coats. And boy I hope the deck furniture will glue to this ... ![]() ![]()

As expected, here is my first hurdle, so I'm hoping you guys can give me some sagely advice. I'm installing the bulwarks. Simple enough. The two main pieces simply sit snuggly on little shelf grooves on each bulkhead. Of course, they're not perfect as you still get a good few millimeters of wriggle when attaching the bulkheads to the false keel (if I had my time over, I'd use blocks of balsa to make sure they were nice and parallel). The bulwarks are flush as a toilet where they meet the deck. Winner. ![]()

The bulwarks are fitting beautifully along the hull, with only a mill of difference in height on each side (thank you bulkhead wriggle). But the problem is specifically around the third piece at the back: the sternboard. The sternboard fills this gap. Now I'll explain in a second why I haven't glued the last little length of the bulwarks to the hull. ![]()

You mention the bulkhead gaps,It's not too late to consider balsa wood blocks as a filler conformed to the shape of the hull. Not a necessity, but works well - especially at the bow. Good luck and keep those photos coming. Gary [ Edited Mon Jan 05 2015, 07:00am ]

The small piece stuck to the deck are the stern shelves that will hold the rear gunwales up. What you can start to see is it's not all fitting snug. There is a ugly gap between the deck and the sternboard, and about 5mm between the stern shelves and the sternboard. You'll notice I've got the top edge of the sternboard sitting flush with the bulwarks (actually a smidge higher so I can eventually plane a nice flat top to affix the gunwales). Now in the second picture I've temporarily attached one half of the gunwales. At the stern the two halves will come together to form a protrusion (imagine what you see here mirrored) and that is what the stern shelves are supposed to hold. In the third picture, you'll see just how far out the stern shelf is from the gunwales. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Would be very keen on you opinion. Chris
