However as I've a lot of experience in cardboard modeling and none in ship building I thought that this would be a good learning experience. I found a plane of sorts and printed it out on A4 paper so that I could create some templates. In hindsight I should have used A3 paper as this would have lead to a larger model which would have made the task at hand much simpler. Any way I created some templates and from these I cut out my center board and bulkheads using 2mm poster board. These pieces were assembled and can be seen in the picture below ![]() I've also already done a lot of the sanding work on the bulkheads so that they are even and will present a smooth surface for the planking. Some of the bulkheads needed to be bulked up using shims of thin cardboard on the upper part of the bulkhead. For example the slight discolouration on the 4th bulkhead from the bow on the starboard side is just one of the areas.

These pieces will help support the planking in these areas.![]() Bow filler pieces made from three pieces of balsa wood ![]() Stern filler pieces made from three pieces of balsa wood I used multiple pieces of balsa wood as I didn't have a piece large enough to fill the space alone. The rough shape was carved out and then sanded to fit before being glued in place. Next phase will be to plank the hull which is the real reason I started this experimental cardboard model.

This seems as if it would be an interesting build so I'll sit on the bleachers and cheer you on. On a side note if you want information in regards to basic planking techniques visit this site, http://modelshipworldforum.com/resources/Framing_and_Planking/plankingprojectbeginners.pdf I hope this comes in handy. Coincidently I had just finished reading this article when I saw your link to it, but again tanks any way. I've also started the planking. I've chosen to start at the deck level but will probably move to the Garboard plank after I have put down a few rows. Again I'm a little disapointed that I chose to make such a small model. I've cut a few planks and these are 3mm in width which ascetically is a little too wide. But I can't cope with a smaller width. So we will see how I go. I'll post a picture or two after I get a few planks down.

I haven't really planed the number or width of the planks but have been paying particular attention to how they meet port to stern at the bow and stern areas. In anticipation of having to make up space in the middle of the ship I've tapered two of the planks so they are actully 4mm rather than 2mm. These planks are 3rd and 4th from the top plank. ![]() The Bow shows the alignment of the port and stern planks the bottom port plank was thinned a little to even things up. Also I need to clean up the way some of the planks butt against the center board. ![]() The planks ending at the stern are a little messy one of them I actually folded across, but I will probably remove this and lay the planks at the back of the stern as shot sized to fit pieces. Lost more to do and I didn't rabbit? the center board but I'm not sure that I needed to. We will see how it goes when I get there.

Some people will add two layers of planking material on their models. The first layer being of a less costly material as a means of laying down the ground work for an expensive veneer. The second layer will go above the first either following the same pattern or overlapping the first layer. Can't wait until your next installment. Ray

The first two looked nice but the third plank was showing me that the angle was deviating from the bulkheads and things were going to get messy. I think I'll have to try cutting a dogleg shaped plank and see how that works. No picture at the moment, but I'll try and get one up soon.

I'be managed to get most of the planking done. ![]() one thing I can say is that planking isn't as hard as I though but I'm glad I did this test build before working on a kit. ![]() ![]() In general I'm happy with what I achieved, but there are some things I would do differently if I did this project again. For one the planking doesn't follow the true curved shape of the original design. This was a consequence of me choosing to flatten the decks. Unfortunatly this meant that the various decks appear to be very high. The other part I can comment on is that the planking in the pictures appears to be very rough. Partly this was intentional as I like a model to look rough and try to accentuate freatures. However in the pictures it looks rougher than in real life. Any way I'm open to comments, and this build is me trying to learn so feel free to say anything that comes to mind, you won't offend me.
