Wanting a reddish brick with a light mortar I used small pieces of Padauk and Holly. The Padauk was cut to approximately 16 pieces each 1/8" thick (about 1" wide by 4" long) and the Holly was cut just as thin as I could slice it. These were alternated and stacked and glued into a single pile. This pile was sliced into columns. (I didn't have a picture of the initial stack so am starting with the photo of a column. ![]() These columns were then stacked and glued side by side with another layer of Holly between them. Make sure to stagger them in a brick pattern. ![]() Take this, run it through the bandsaw and the final slices will give you sections of bricks with mortar included. ![]() Cut, join and glue together to make the base beneath the ships stove. ![]() Place the stove on top. And eventually cover under the forecastle deck boards to be hidden from prying eyes. ![]() Why is it we get so much joy out of details that no one will see?

Very nicely done - but it looks as though you have enough bricks for an entire fleet! ![]()

Keeping in mind that the goal is to eliminate paint, I have given myself a horrible problem. The 2 woods used are Swiss Pear and Ebony and I need to butt the ends of the masts to show a painted Top and Trestle Tree. I admit I knew this was going to be a concern from day 1 of the build, so lots of thought has been put into solving the problem as best as I can. This is what I came up with. I will start with the build of the Top ![]() Half lapping the floor boards. The boards were first glued sided to side and then cut while one unit. This saved me lots of passes on the table saw and guaranteed a snug fit. ![]() Gluing the floor boards ![]() After sanding only the inside shape of the gunwale it was glued in place. ![]() A trip to the belt sander removed the excess on the outside and gave me a smooth edge all around ![]() ![]() Add the battens ![]() The Lower Trestletrees and Lower Crosstrees ![]() Add the Stanchions ![]() Now I attach the top of the Foremast complete with banding. ![]() AT this point I have the Deadeyes installed, the Base of the Fore Topmast and the Cap. I have two separate methods of attaching this to the masts. The top has been doweled and the bottom hasa "tounge and Groove" approach. ![]() ![]() ![]() After tapering the mast with some sandpaper and a drill, the slot was cut into it and was then attached to the "Top Assembly" ![]() Once the Front Fish? and Cheeks are added, it hides the joint of the Mast and Top Assembly. And in this case the Wooldings have a real purpose. They are helping with the integrity of the joint. ![]() Add the Fore Topmast on the dowel joint. and begin assembly of the Topmast Trestletrees and Crosstrees ![]() ![]() Attach to Topmast and add the Fore Topgallant Mast ![]() This will complete the bulk of my Fore Mast. Additional details will follow. ![]()

The joining of masts instead of one solid piece has certainly weakened them. It is my hope that the rigging will actually help with keeping everything straight, true and together. Time will tell.
