I'm pretty much settled on the ones shown in my last post. Since I only modeled one, and repeated it 9 times per section, I moved them side-to-side a little so they weren't in a perfectly straight line, and tilted them slightly all to add a little bit of irregularity. The starboard one lean left (inboard), the port ones lean right. There's 200 hammocks represented in sections of 9 hammocks each. The sets fore of the entry port have 53 hammocks, so there's a "starter" section, 4 9 hammocks sections, and an 8-hammock section, port and starboard. The sets aft of the entry port contain 47 hammocks in 1 starter section, 3 9-hammock sections, a 6-hammocks piece, and a 5-hammock piece to accommodate the more pronounced curve in the bulwark back aft. The starter sections have a slightly longer "tray" to butt the end panel at it's front, the other section are designed to butt against the section ahead of it as closely as it can. There's a little gap between sections, but I didn't correct that in order maintain that irregularity mentioned above. The gun circles may be done, I printed them and need to test fit them to the boat yet. ![]() ![]() [ Edited Fri Apr 22 2022, 07:34pm ]

First though, the gun circles I made were too simple. A period manual showed they were a bit more involved, so I beefed up the 3D model and when the printer was back online, printed them out. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here they are glued to the deck with CA and painted Testor's "Steel." ![]() ![]() ...and with the guns ... ![]() ![]()

The wheels (trucks?) at the rear of the carriages appear to be at 90 degrees to the rear circles. Are they actually for pivoting the gun around the front circles when they have to move off the rear circle and across the deck?

These are a little thicker (1.5mm) than they ought to be, but they're more accurate than my hand cut ones by a long shot. PE is the sensible route for such things, but I've never made any myself, and the 3D printer's right here on my desk, so... Art, The from of the chassis doesn't have trucks, but rather has skid plates on the underside of that big tombstone shaped slab. The deck circles go where the skid plates travel, or where the wheels would slide sideways and not roll. If you look at the image from the manual you can see their gun carriage is basically the same as mine. Mine is from plans for the Mississippi's pivot guns I got from the National Archives. This plan I found recently is a portion of the spar-deck plan of the Mississippi's. Her guns weren't "shifting" but were purely pivoting, so the deck circle plan is much more simple and includes rails where the aft trucks would roll. ![]() The photo of the model is the sloop of war Savannah in 1:24 scale at the maritime museum in Savannah Georgia, that scene is kind of what I'm going for. ![]() ![]()

The front of the chassis is normally pinned to the centre of one of the small outer circles. The rear of the chassis can then be swung from side to side to load, aim or fire the gun. That's what the rear trucks are for. The rear of the chassis is only temporarily pinned to the centre circle when the front of the chassis is to be moved to a different position. Is that correct?

Was over the fever inside of a week, and not required to isolate after about 3 days without a fever - which I skewed by taking a "fever reducer" for a headache. Anyway, my head was in a fog most of the time, but once that cleared I got back to work. The skylight was redone, again, to widen the center bar so the sashed will lay better, and move the bars from ON the sash to IN it. ![]() I modeled and printed the bitts. I held off gluing the hammocks on because I thought I'd need to install hawse pipes near these bitts, but after looking at photos and plans, there aren't any. ![]() ![]() so, I started gluing on the hammocks ![]() I modeled and printed the stuns'l yard irons, inboard and outboard. The printing of the inboard ones failed, so I need to print those again, but the outboard ones are done. I need to fashion square brass rod to put in the ends of the yard to attach these to. ![]() ![]() [ Edited Fri May 27 2022, 05:12pm ]
