But, back at the end of March (2020) I got an Elegoo Mars resin 3D printer and immediately printed some cannon for my Macedonian model (I already had the 3D models for those). don't forget to click the pic for a larger view ![]() For Constellation I took a crack at 3D modeling the head ornamentation in Anim8tor (a free 3D modeling package I've used since the 90's) and found it a bit much for my rusty skills. ![]() I put that aside for the moment and decided to "practice" by doing something I was more up-to-speed with; like guns. I started with the boat howitzer for the launch which has a sled for use in the boat, and a field carriage for use on shore. ![]() ![]() A couple of test prints didn't turn out very well, but they did show me where the model needed to be tweeked. ![]() ![]() The next model I got into was the 10" shell gun on the pivot mount. I had started a very basic 3D model of this gun a long time ago, so this was more a matter of detailing and fixing a few things. Here's the drawing I worked from, and the original 3D model: ![]() ![]() A few days later I had the pivot gun done, well, I think it's done, I still have to double check I didn't miss anything. ![]() ![]() I haven't attempted to print this gun yet, in fact I need to print two of them! I'm hoping to print it all in one piece because they basically serve as handles for opening the hatches they sit on. I have a list of other items to 3D model and print for Constellation, the head carvings, of course, the gangway boards, boarding steps, crew figures, blocks, hearts, boat accessories like oars, buckets, boxes, and so on. Being working R/C models, printing parts from digital files is great because if something is broken or damaged because of the model being handled so much, it's not a big deal to replace - Macedonian's figurehead of Alexander the Great, for instance. Now, if I can only get the knack of modeling figures.

In the first try at printing the pivot gun the breech of the gun came loose and turned into a blob. I stopped the print rather than waste resin. I edited the model a little to strengthen this connection, as well as fix a couple of minor flaws and overlooked bits. The next try was less successful as the model pulled free of it's supports and didn't print at all. ![]() ![]() While trying to figure out the best setting to make to supports strong enough for the job, I made the anchor's model. This had the same issue as the gun at first, the flukes pulled loose and printed as a pancake until it was finally peeled up by the rest of the model. ![]() ![]() ![]() The boarding steps came out without a hitch, but then they didn't need supports. These are about 3/4 inch across and there's 12 of them on either side of the ship. ![]() ![]() ![]() While I wait for more resin before I try printing the larger items again (I need two guns and four anchors!), I'll continue making the other parts I need in 3D. Next I thing I'll give a try are the boarding port end boards. I had printed the design on a color printer and glued it to a sheet of bass, but now I should be able to do it justice in 3D. ![]()

The front of the slide and some other details didn't print right, but it got close. ![]() ![]()
