Regarding ZHL, I did not know about their reputation when the kit was purchased. I am now much better informed and will in future buy from reputable manufacturers. I've made a start on the kit, so avoiding the obligatory 'open box' images I'll fill in some detail then jump to where I am now. Kit inspection revealed a broken stern lantern, this was quickly replaced by ZHL. Otherwise all was present and correct. I'm thinking of changing the veneer for the decking, perhaps someone can recommend a good replacement wood available in the UK? The false keel comes in two large parts. The first issue I had was that the rear part was warped. I tried to flatten it by wetting and pressing. It looked OK so I went ahead and fitted all the bulkheads after joining the front and rear parts. Then the warp returned!! The eventual cure was to clamp the assembly into my building board, then attach heavy G clamps to induce an opposite twist. This worked but it took a couple of weeks and some wetting to completely get the twist out. Hull is now roughly faired. Only one bulkhead was a bit out, number 10 and I've added strips to fatten it up a bit: ![]() Meanwhile I worked on several small parts. The rear bulkhead has some detail including the head of 'Poseidon' this was not very well defined on the kit part, so I added a new face in air dry modelling clay: ![]() The pearl has some lanterns hanging outside the cabin door. I'm going to light the model with LEDs. So I'm working on some tiny lanterns. They are only 4mm diameter, just big enough to fit around a 3mm LED. I'm doing couple by hand for the Pearl, but may use the CAD drawings I have done to get some photetch versions made. ![]() One of the things I'm really enjoying about model ship building is the variety of tasks. During breaks while fairing the hull I did some detailing work around the cabin door. ![]() Door handles and hinges were scratch made from copper wire. Just a note on the windows. There are two approaches, the kit provides 8 complete frames. 4 could be stuck on the outside of the wall but the inner frame work would be flush with the outer frame. It looked a bit naff, so I cut the inner part of the frame out and recessed it in the wall, using the first 4 pieces, then cut out 4 separate frames from the remaining 4 parts. There are laser markings that make this easy to do, but no mention of it in the instructions. It is a bit of extra work, but I think it looks more realistic with the inner frames recessed back, helps with adding glazing later as well as it can be added to the back and sit flush with the inner frame work. There are no apologies in this build for rubbish workwomanship, reference images show the Pearl is as rough as a bag of nails. It is also just the cure for a jaded plastic modeler who got so bogged down in detail perfection that I stopped enjoying doing it. Think the next job is to add some stern and bow fillers. Balsa for this job arrived this morning.

Not so here we will even direct you to other build logs on the same subject at different forums. glad to see you here check this one out http://www.shipsofscale.com/sosforums/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=1082 about that warp problem go here and check out how it got fixed http://modelshipbuilder.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?26836 [ Edited Mon Feb 20 2017, 03:55pm ]

Thanks Arthur shall take a look, I've order some things from Cornwall Model Boats already but can get a bit lost with all the choices when it comes to wood! Shall look at the tanganyica.

So new updates are here: http://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=1123 Unless people feel I should keep it running here also? Quite a bit or work to update both logs.
