After looking at the plans, I thought I'd take a stab at building one. My main area of interest is batteaux that may have been used on Lake Champlain and Lake George during the years of the American Revolution. While the model plans are dated for the War of 1812, my brief research shows that it's still similar in construction to earlier models, though some of the framing may be a bit different. I just read The Lake George Bateaux: British Colonial Utility Craft In The French And Indian War the other night, which is a study of batteaux remains found at the bottom of Lake George. In that thesis, remains studied show floor battens across the bottom planks, with separate frames, unlike this model. Once I finish this one, I may attempt another using the framing shown in the thesis to compare the differences. I picked up supplies and a couple of new tools yesterday, and began my build last evening. First step was to cut, sand, and assemble the floor planking. That was all that I was able to accomplish yesterday. Today I found time to cut and add the stem and stern posts, then add the floor framing. Tomorrow I hope to add the rest of the framing members. I did have time to cut out and glue the framing patterns to a piece of 1/8" wood, plus cut and add a few of the framing members.![]() ![]()

As I expected, I had just enough time to cut, sand, and place the rest of the ribs today in between kids dental appointments and cleaning the house. I'll need to shape and align the ribs a bit, but I'm pretty happy with it so far. ![]()

I steamed the bottom, then let it dry with supports under then end, and weight in the center to add a bit of rocker. That needed to dry over night. Today I had a bit of time to add the stringers.![]() ![]() ![]()
