Many years ago it was my first attempt at building a plank on bulkhead wooden ship model. It took a while but after several starts and stops I finished it and gave it to my boss who was an avid sailor. Like I said I have several other wood kits sitting around, some are solid hulled and others require planking. One in particular, the Pride of Baltimore II by Model Shipways is nearing the point where I will need to start planking. It, to me, is a fairly large investment and that is why I have waited almost 20 years to start working on it. But I am getting older and if I truly intend to build it I need to get a move on. So, back to the lobster smack. The most difficult aspect of this build is the type of wood Midwest selected for the planks, balsa. Due to the fact that there are only 4 planks, attaching them to the framework required a lot of bending and sanding to achieve the final shape. I came very close in a couple of areas of sanding away too much of the planks. I started holding the hull up to a bright light to find where the skin had gotten dangerously thin. Now that it has several coats of sanding sealer and a couple of coats of paint I hope I don't accidentally punch a finger through a thin spot. I am almost finished with the hull and cabin so I am starting on the mast and bowsprit.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I then ironed out the remaining creases and then proceeded to draw the outline of the sails from the plan sheet. I then coated the cloth with Model Master semi gloss finish to stiffen the cloth before cutting out the sails.![]() ![]()
