I wanted to build a ship that was built back in the 1800's by the Vaughan family in St. Martin's, New Brunswick (the village I live in) and after much research I have found that there is basically no information other than tonnage and rigging. So with this basic knowledge and a photograph of a painting of the "Wm Carson" built by David Vaughan in 1846 I looked for available plans of other ships that would match (tonnage and rigging) and settled on the Dunbrody Irish famine ship built in 1845 in Quebec. The actual plans that I will use is of the replica Dunbrody built in 1996 that I ordered from Seaways Publishing. The following are some pictures that I took of the actual painting of the Wm Carson that is at the New Brunswick Museum in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada ![]() ![]() ![]()

I used maple and walnut on my first build and used orange shellac as the maple was too light. I will just used wipe on poly on this build as shellac is can produce botches if you are not careful. I modified the drawings from Dunbrody to simplify things and also to match the stern of the Wm. Carson. The rear cants were changed to square half frames and the keel was straightened in the stern area. The first 2 pictures show the frame construction for the Dunbrody and the modified layout for the Wm. Carson ![]() ![]() Then the modified stern (rounded) ![]() ![]() counter timbers and a sample frame ![]() ![]() frame lines (body plan) ![]() main deck and accommodation deck ![]() ![]() and finally the keel assembly ![]()

It is not as clean looking as without the darkening (pencil) but it is a little more realistic. ![]() ![]() ![]()

As Joseph says trees were not long enough to do in one piece and even if they did grow that long it was much easier to work with shorter pieces (transportation and handling) ![]()

The height I picked was the highest from the bottom of the keel to the point just before where the frame width (port to starboard) starts to narrow. This was cut out of a 1/4" hardboard scrap I had up in my workshop. I cut the inside line of the notches using a jigsaw and then using a razorsaw and small chisel cut each of the notches. ![]() ![]() I then spent some time up at the workshop on the table saw cutting slats out of cherry for the frame blanks. I had drawn about 8 different frame blanks that would accommodate the 50 odd square, half and cant frames for the ship. ![]() ![]() ![]() After gluing up all the frame blanks for the middle 25 square frames I started cutting the frames on the bandsaw and sanding down to the lines. A few of these will need to be beveled but are just placed on the keel for now. The machine setup in the new shipyard is great to work on. Everything is together and with a few short steps I can cut, sand, bevel and drill. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Next will be the cant and half frames. I will finish fitting all the frames and then mark their placement on the keel. Once the placement is marked I will remove all the frames and then make adjustments to the bearding and rabbet lines so everything lines up and then make those cuts.
