Well, I finally did it, so here we go. After some research I noticed that the real ship had two deck levels and my model didn't, so I decided to start by adding that detail. I cut a new deck from 1/16" basswood, which of course would make the deck that much higher, so the next step would be to add the 1/16" to the gunwales, one thickness in the foredeck and two thicknesses at the quarterdeck. ![]() In the photo, I've only cut one thickness of the basswood for the gunwales. I'll cut the second (aft) thickness once I locate the breakbeam (thanks to jacknastyface2 for that term) and know where that second thickness goes. The next step will be to lay out the planking on both decks and mark where the deck features go. Then I can go on to the waterline and drilling for the masts. Keeping my fingers crossed. BTW, if I sound like a landlubber, it's 'cuz I am. ![]()

I also borrowed ideas from a pdf file and some other builds from various modelers. I am finishing up on an old Scientific sold hull Bluenose for my 1st wooden kit. Here's a pic of what I started off with. Someone had glued the two decks to the hull before I got this. I'll be following your progress with your build and I wish you smooth sailing with your project! ![]()

A few of the online instructions and practicums (and some of the photos) indicated that the planking is parallel to the centerline on the foredeck, but that it's parallel to the gunwales and tapers towards the stern on the quarterdeck. I also found a technique for simulating the planking by scoring it with an X-Acto knife, then giving it a shadow line with a 5mm pencil before staining or shellacking it. So I decided to cheat a bit and lay the planking out on a drafting program, print it, spray mount it to the deck, and then cut it out with the knife. My old French curves from school didn't work out, so I cut the curves freehand. ![]() ![]() Once I have both decks "planked," I'll try out the stain or finish technique to make sure it's a go before attaching them to the hull.
