It changes with the light and reflects things around it for more of a glassy look. Now I really wanted to have a go at painting. My wife got me an airbrush and compressor at xmas. I am new to airbrushing. I can do great with a spray can tho, so thought it can't be that much of a difference. First I needed to sand out that area along the sides and give the hull a cleaning. Did my airbrush research and mixed and primed the ship again using white acrylic primer purchased from MS. Note: I mixed the primer about 50/50 with water. Sprayed it on and did an ok job of covering the ship. Yes I taped up the deck ![]() Primer cured and got a light sanding, then I sprayed a wide band of yellow around the upper cove work at the waist. Just sprayed a wide band which would become the cove stripe. Followed this by doing the same with white around the area of the waterline. All was good. Now I decided on a plan (sort of) on how to get my cove and waterline stripe accomplished. I taped using Tamiya yellow tape over the area of the cove stripe on up to the top of the waist. Thus to give me the bottom edge of the stripe. Then I taped off the area where the waterline top band would be. To accomplish the waterline I made up a new stand to work on the ship with and a waterline marker based on MS's design. See pic below. The stand is adjustable on the forward section by removing the T-pins you can slid the mount up or down. Reinstall pins and away you go! Great because the forward section of the ship needs to be ruffly 1/2" above level from the stern. ![]() So with the waterline marked and everything taped I sprayed the main section of Black and got a nice coating put on. This I let cure over night (possibly a mistake) because in the morning as I peeled back the tape from the top section, the yellow and some of the black proceeded to come with it. Ahhhhhh!!! HELP! I walked away in disgust... it didn't last long and I am back at it. Sanded the effected area's, resprayed the yellow, re-taped and tried it all over again. This time I allowed the black to dry to the touch ( one hour maybe 2 ) and I did both sides at once. Now I slowly peeled back the tape folding it right back over on itself and viola success! Phew ![]() Important Note: A bit of advice buddy at the hobby store gave me. Cut your tape before you apply it for the pin stripe. This will give you a superior edge. So I ran the tape down the mirror and used a ruler and blade to cut the full length of the strip first. Taking a 1/8" strip off and giving me a super clean edge. So now I cut the tape edge and taped for the width of the yellow pin stripe. This meant just having to now spray the waist area with the black. Again great success! So now I switched and feeling confident taped for the width of the water line below the black and switched color to the MS4814- Hull Copper Red! I spayed the base of the hull and keel and removed the tape shortly after, great success on the stripe again. My airbrush though seemed to be acting up a bit and the red has a super fine texture to it. The black is like silk. Picks of the final results below... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Wasn't easy trying to tape around the curve at the rudder but good enough for non union work ![]() Cheers this is a far as I've gotten to date.

A small spot of durabond 90 was used, just so I knew I would have a nice smooth spot for the brush work. Thanks for the comment. Regards ~

Plan shows a shackle attached to this ring. I may want to fashion one up now because getting it on there after might be a (you know what) ![]() Also cleaned up the top of the waist in prep for the Rail and repainted the stanchions and waist. Nothings glued in yet. Plus fashioning a couple mooring chock's don't like the kit ones... Regards ~ ![]()
