Dave Stevens of the Lumberyard in Ohio has always claimed that you can purchase a PILE of good stock from him with the amount of money you will spend on modeling power tools! He is probably correct. I think there were three guys on MSW who came and went into business providing dressed lumber for modelers. The last one was shipping overseas and many members said he had very good service and would replace stuff if it was inferior. Unfortunately it was not long before he gave up. Dave has stayed with it and I have bought some wood in the past from him. Keith.

It is a big step and an expense to buy power tools if you are not sure if they are right for you. Here is what I advised Robin. Hi Robin, Something to think about. You are obviously very interested to enter into scratch building and I am glad. It is just an extension of kit building. This is just a suggestion, but consider enquiring from Dave Stevens of Lumberyard Ohio, if he would cut you some billets of wood of your choice. Size would be, say 1" X 3" X 24"LG. Purchase a good band saw, preferably American made. Delta is good and you can plane the wood by hand, one edge and a face, so that you can slice it into whatever thickness and width you require. It's best for this with a 3/4" wide blade and few teeth. It can even act as a freehand scroll saw with a 1/8" blade, to do frames. In other words, Lumberyard would do your raw lumber purchasing (Dave Stevens does know his wood BTW) and you would do the process. I have not talked to Dave for years. He must be OLD too. Tell me what you think. Years ago Lumberyard sold me some pear wood rough sawn which I processed myself. Soon after he said that pear was too expensive and would not have any more. Robin is right. It's tough to find. Belgian modelers are famous for using it.

My rule of thumb is to estimate the volume of wood in cubic inches (or cubic cms. ) and add at least 40% for sawing, planing and general waste. Sounds a lot? You will be surprised! Keith.

I want to have a good look around locally at what is available for wood. We are fortunate to have two specialty wood shops in the area.
