For various reasons, mainly a lack of time, I stopped working on it when the first planking was done. Now, I finely got the time again to continue, and it feels good to see some progress! As I have been reading a lot in build logs here on this website, I thought it might be a good idea to start a log myself. I would like to hear your opinion and maybe somebody else can learn something from my mistakes! Below are some pictures I took back in 2014: ![]() ![]() Starting the build with bulkheads and main deck | Main deck planking finished and forecastle deck beams installed ![]() ![]() Close up of bow | Close up of stern ![]() ![]() Gunports installed, guns placed and aft deck beams installed | Started the first planking layer As written above, I finished the first layer of planking and stopped afterwards. A few weeks ago I started working on the model again and enjoy it a lot. I will continue my log in a reply as this post is quite long already with all the pictures. Kind regards, Irian [ Edited Sun Apr 19 2020, 04:25pm ]

That, combined with my lack of experience, caused me to encounter some difficulties with the planking. For the first layer of planking I'm affraid I did not do enough research on how to do it exactly and followed the Mamoli instructions the way I interpreted them. I remember that back in 2014 I had to do a lot of sideways bending of each plank which caused it to lift on one edge. After sanding a lot of gaps between the planks appeared. The second layer of planking I hope I started the right way. As explained on numerous places, I started with temporarily fixing a plank roughly halfway down the hull and let it follow it's natural path. The strange thing I then found was that the plank at the bow ended up in the top corner and I did not see that on any pictures found on the internet. I checked my work by laying numerous planks alongside the temporary one and it looked quite right, although I am still wondering if it actually is. I started filling the top half of the hull with planks, tapering them by calculating the necessary width at each bulkhead. Due to the very narrow part at the bow, I had to use multiple drop planks. However, I think I did not do that the right way. As you can see in the pictures below, I stopped two planks at their half-width size and continued with a new one. This creates a weak spot in the hull, which you wouldn't want to have that far near the bow. Thinking about it now, I should have continued one of the planks widening them when the other one stopped. ![]() ![]() ![]() Today I have fitted the gardboard and will continue planking the second layer of planks. Let's see how the bow ends up! Lighting Some of you might be wondering what those two shiny metal pieces in the keel are. I am a technical guy and thought it might look nice to have a small light in the accommodation areas. I made a connection point on each side of the stand. The two metal parts you see in the keel are fitting in the stand connections and have wiring to the forward and aft accommodations. See the pictures below for a further impression (I will fix that loose wiring later on). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [ Edited Sun Apr 19 2020, 04:26pm ]

You have discovered what modelers call a "Viking bow" It happens when you let the planks follow their natural sweep UPWARDS AT BOW AND STERN. If you go to home page and then hit The logo Navy Board Ship Models on the right side, then press HOW TO's, it will lead you to a couple of practicums on planking the hull and also the deck. The main theme for the hull is to line it out first, either in pencil or black thread in easily managed belts of five strakes. A strake is one layer of plank going from bow to stern. Keith.
