I started off with palstic kits but over the years I have built two POB woodeen kits (Mamoli, Blue Shadow and Roter Lowe). Building those kits has given me the experience of POB ship modeling. Several years ago Amati came out with a POB model of the HMS Prince (Launched 1670). I fell in love with the beauty of the ship, but at the time the kit was beyond my means. Amati discontinued the kit but the palns and the cast metal decorations are still available. I have acquired athose items and have started consnstruction of the model. The bulkheads and keel were cut out of 1/4" Baltic Birch Plywood and I'm ready to assemble the bulkhead frame. I plan to use the double plank on bulkhead method with an under layer of limewood (or possibly basswood) and walnut, mahogony etc. outer planking. I'm sure I will have many questions of the more experienced modlers as I go on. I can see from reading other threads that there is a knowledgable community on this site. A couple of questions I have now are: Would a 17th century ship have diffrent size (heavier) cannon on the lower decks? Also the kit requires a lot of brass wire decorative strip. These strips are about 3mm to 4mm wide aand 210mm long and have a simple decorative pattern stamped into them. These are still available from Amati but they are fairly expensive. Does any one have any ideas as to how I could dublicate these? I have included some pictures of the plans and the bulkheads/keel cutouts (several hours at the scroll saw). Thanks in advance. Mike PS I hope I'm adding these pictures correctly. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Those bulkheads look very intricate. I've never seen any with all those cut-outs in them, that must have taken a while with the scroll saw. I built Amati's bireme a couple of years ago and that has some decorative brass strip on it. I don't know what the strip you're wanting looks like, but Cornwall Model Boats list several different Amati decorative strips - http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/amati_decorative_strip.html

After cutting out all the bulkheads and keel I had a brief respite while working on other projects. Lately I have glued recessed plywood blocks in the niches that will hold the decorative metal panels that will adorn the exposed bulkheads. I have also assembled the bulkheads on to the keel. I plan to display the model with all the gun hatches raised and the guns rolled out. To that end I have measured and started to cut out the 1/16" plywood gun decks to support the gun carriages and the top decking. Before planking I will install all the decking, gun carriages and gun ports. I'm not entirely sure how I will build gun ports, but I'm leaning towards using balsa glues between the bulkheads with the ports cut out. If anyone has any better suggestions, I would love to hear them. Mike ![]() ![]() ![]()

It was actually quit a challenge to get the gun decks to set down properly on the bulkheads. After trying a couple of diffrent methods I used the wire grips from medium sized binder clips. These had preety good spirng action and I could hold the gun deck in place by compressing the grips with a hemostat and placing it between the gun deck and bulkhead frame (see picture). That method worked well and the gun decks are in the position. Next come the gun ports and cannon carridges. I'm not sure yet if I will use dummy cannon barrels or actual barrels. I may even try to make my own by turning dowels using a lath. We'll see. BTW has anyone done any buisness with Cromwell Model Boats in the UK. They are out of stock of the limewood laths that I want for the first planking. I have emailed them several times to find out when the laths will be available but they have not responded. I was wondering they are to work with.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
