I am thinking of using maple for the keels and framework and walnut for the planking and to highlight certain sections. This will be my first scratch built. I don't have a local supplier of basswood, but it seems to be very popular to scratch builders. Is using maple a mistake?

Maple is almost double that. They also have some exotics (teak $34.75!) I will contemplate using basswood, not due to its cost but its ease of use. I have maple and walnut left over from my kitchen project and may still use that. Thanks for your help. ToddM
