Thankfully he has done the hard work already, and all that was required was a little lofting on my part. The transom pieces were cut out oversize to make sure that I had plenty of material to get the final shape after fairing. The fashion piece (frame 26) consists of forward and aft sections, which have been cut out as well. At this point I’m ready for some assembly work. I’m dry fitting the five transom pieces, as well as the aft fashion pieces to the deadwood. Once I’m satisfied with the fit everything gets glued up. I realized too late that I failed to take a picture of how the forward fashion piece was fabricated. We’ll cover that process in detail when I do the remaining cant frames. With this piece glued in place I’m ready to do some fairing. As far as the fairing goes, lots of sanding by hand and patience was required! I’m a fan of power tools as much as anyone else but it is just a little too aggressive for me in such a refined area. Using sanding blocks and some file work her lines are beginning to emerge. To accomplish this I used 100 grit sandpaper to get the rough shape, followed by 220, and finish up with a 600 grit wet/dry paper. The final step was to add the five fillers on each side under the lower transom piece. For these I simply shaped and fitted the pieces in place. At this point the wing transom and top timbers of the fashion piece have been left oversize. This includes added length to the top timbers. I’ll glue small spacer blocks between the frames in this area as I go to add stability to things. I’ll work this area as I continue to add the additional cant frames. Later during the build when I add the counter timbers I’ll fair things up some more to the final shape. The transom area was a somewhat challenging task and I’m happy with the results. Her lines will really begin to take shape now as I continue to add the rest of the stern cant frames. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I have read and watched other scratch builds that are plank on frame and I noticed they do not start fairing the hull until the framed hull is completed. I noticed the started fairing the stern section before continuing on. The question is do you have to do this in this manner or is it up to the builder when he or she starts their fairing process? Because to me if and when I someday start a tall ship it seems to me to be easier to fair a portion at a time rather the whole hull at once. cheers Mario

For me the transom was a bit of a challenge and I wanted to be sure I was on the right path, so I went ahead and faired her at this stage. There will be some additional fairing done as I progress. Then an overall final finish sanding done when I get all of the framing in place. That's my plan, anyway. Thanks for stopping by...BTW, how goes the batteau? Jeff

Because to me it sure would be a bear to fair the completed framed hull. Seems to me it would be better to do the rough fairing during the process of framing the hul... As for the Batteau. With 3 little ones at home me and the wife are busy with end of school year stuff. Plus relatives graduations, weddings, baby showers, birthdays,,,,,man it has been busy. This past week I was only able to look at it as I passed by the modeling room. LOL! Starting this week things are coming to an end and settling down so hopefully more time to play soon..
