Original plans show the ordinary process of plank on bulkhead type construction and double planked hull. Yet Amati have some errors in own plans and also - in my opinion their model have too small number of bulkheads to do well done first layer planking. The hull type, curvatures etc. for this model require either more bulkheads, or more fillers at least in my opinion. So I decided to change some things: I decided to insert wood fillers between all bulkheads, but not full fillers , just a kind of thick edge fillers so I still retain hollow hull structure, but with solid smooth perfectly shaped and sanded surface. Although it seems at the first glance additional and not necessary job, it will for sure add structural strength and stiffness of the model and, although I still didn't decide it definitively- might allow me to do perfect single layer planking. Here are some pics how it is going along: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I used it extensively during my attempt. The idea to fill in around the hull is interesting, in the YouTube he filled in the bow curve before planking and I stole that idea and found that it did help with the tricky curvature at the front. Otherwise the planking went pretty well though the material was difficult to bend. Since you are doing a scratch build you will have options on that front. I am enjoying your posts. Yes, I know for the Amati series of videos showing build log and instructions of exactly this model, and yes I found them also quite useful The idea to make hull this way came to me from two different methods - combined actually: First of all, for all plank on the frame models, frames are very tight and gaps very narrow - to none on some places as they have build true ships, therefore allowing quite smooth planking surface. Secondly- the restoration/ reconstruction of my 50 years old carrack which at the time was build according thold plans I had as solid hull. Single layer planking of that solid hull despite tremendously rounded old style hull very hard otherwise to plank in 2 layers went easily like a breeze. So I wanted now to combine- making PoB hull, simulating tight frames by the wood fillers, while making fillers to mimic tight frames leaving hollow hull. I expect that final planking will go as smooth as on my Argosy carrack, if not even easier since Carrack was really tough hull shape to plank. [ Edited Wed Dec 02 2020, 02:00pm ]

A few helpful notes: This plans have multiple issues which are often when it is coming from the kit completes, so I (as usually) keep modifying and modifying..... Instead of just one false lower deck - below the stairs hatch I made two additional planked false decks - one below each stern gratings. At 1:60 scale gratings holes are large enough to partially see trough and it wouldn't be nice to see bulkheads or keel just below gratings. SO I cut out parts of the keel, and bulkheads, and added 2 additional false decks. Pictures show how realistically these false decks look like One more thing about this method of making hulls: it is really amazing how accurate smooth, perfect shaped hull could be created inserting thick hull wooden filers instead of 2-layer planking. Amati kits like the one where this plans come from suffer of having too small number of bulkheads and they are at the large distance apart, making first layer planking quite difficult. Instead of inserting full balsa fillers like some modelers do, I just cut approx 1cm thick wooden filler blocks inserting them between bulkheads. Thus I retain "hollow model" while eliminating the need for - 2 layer planking, wood putty, sanding of putty etc etc... These pictures show the hull if a perfect accurate shape without any putty to cover failures and gaps. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Since the PoB design of these plans, it is hard to achieve it but since the stern deck have two large gratings ( modification of real Bounty in order to refit it as floating garden, I cut out two windows areas in last stern transom bulkhead so when looking later through the cabin windows it would be possible to see traces of light from these gratings and have a feeling of depth inside

Yet three's some other work to do (and modifications to original plans of course) prior to planking but I hope soon I shall lay down first planks.
