Initially I was going to build from scratch but decided against it purely for purposes of expediency as I don't have a lot of time to spend in the shop making sawdust.
After some searching the only model kit I could find was Amati's 1:100 scale Chinese Pirate Junk. Not exactly what I was hoping for but I think I can modify it to suit my purposes which is to give it to my brother who has a fascination for anything oriental. I think this model will make a nice addition to his collection.

With any luck I should be able to post updates on a weekly basis.

I have found that with most kits at least you will find some pictures that will show the model through some stages of the of the build process. There are no pictures at all in this one. There's a few basic sketches and that's it.

Ths plans and instructions ARE rather sketchy and someplaces contradictory, like showing five guns on drawings and the box picture but four on the plans, and varying looks at some of the bulkheads. I did some online research and found that one place offered a completed model that looked just like the Amati model. I don't remember where it was right now, but I'll look for it tomorrow. The model came out nice so long as you don't expect a historic reality model Chazz

That kind of detail painting though is a little out of my league. ![]() Recently my wife was trying something with a computer printed picture where it was adhered to a piece of wood with shellac and then had a layer of shellac applied over it. I was quite impressed with the results. Might try some tests with something like that to see what it looks like.

This will be a very interesting build. Oh, Amati has always been lousy with their instructions. Kinda like Billing Kits are geared for the more experience modeler....have fun

I used to do a lot of photography here in the southwest and that was how I mounted all my photos. It works very well and is attractive when finished. Never tried it on a ship though, but it should work well. Secret will be to have the background of the image match the surface you apply it to. If the background is clear it should work well. If on a painted surface then it gets tricky matching the printed color to the painted color. Tom [ Edited Tue Aug 28 2012, 05:06am ]
