I was wondering what kind of wood to use for the kit. My thinking is there is a lot of notches to be cut and if i use a hard wood these would be difficult to do with hand tools. All the notches in the deck beams, carlings and kness will have to be done by the builder. I am thinking of Basswood because it is easy to work with. There is no problem with using wood such as Beech or Cherry or Maple but if you do not have a mill you would have to use an Exacto blade to cut the notches which is hard to do. Another idea is to offer a selection of wood so anyone can custom order the kit according to what tools they have. Only issue with this is you never know what wood the next kit will be so you can not have the kits instock and custom orders take more time as the laser cutter does not do one at a time.

How about also offering a straight timbering packages (no laser cutting) as well? Then anyone interested can buy what material they would prefer to work with. I know some people don't have the ability to mill their own timber from scratch so this would certainly be an option worth looking at I think.

As for 'assembling' a kit form of the bomb vessel, you have my vote. I agree with Winston and Don, make the kit basic as far a custom cutting goes. Most scratch builders have accumulated a fair amount of tools over their building careers and in my limited experience with scratch building a good razor saw, files and some good chisels (Pfeil, Woodcreek, Flexcut etc.), good wood and most builders would be very happy. The only option for the kit might be a pre-turned or cast mortar cannon. This item definitely calls for some sort of lathe or casting/moldmaking skills that might deter buyers and novice scratch builders like myself. This is my '2 cents worth'. That is offer just milled sheet stock in any wood so a builder can cut out his own parts or laser cut sheets of parts or kits in three standard wood Cherry, Basswood or Beech. The three 12 pound guns, the mortar and swivil guns are pre turned. A builder can custom make his kit by choosing deck planking in what ever wood he wants, same with the hull planking.

I was already told the cost of laser cutting will be going up in 2013. At 1:48 scale it takes 10 sheets for the kit. If i were to double the size of the kit to 1:24 it will take 25 or more sheets so when you do the math a kit at 1:24 scale will cost $375.00 and that is just the laser time and not materials or the milled stock for planking etc. The project gets to a tipping point where it just cost way to much to produce and it gets priced right out of reach for the average model builder. A wood set of milled sheets can be done with no laser cutting for a reasonable cost at 1:24 scale
