The muzzle to the second reinforcement ring seem to be the most critical area for me. I’ll leave the rings over size for now until I get the barrel diameters between reinforcements close to the right diameters and taper. The muzzle starts at approx. the 18mm mark. Love the way the ebony is cutting. ![]() [ Edited Sat Mar 09 2013, 10:21pm ]

I must constantly remind myself not to crowd the wood and go slow and just enjoy. Also, one needs to be conscious of the relationship of the carbide tip tool position at all times. Very important to have the cutting edge of the tip centered on the work piece by setting the correct tool rest height, tool parallel to the floor, and making sure the tool is flat to the tool rest. That’s why the tool resting portion of the shafts are made flat and not round. You do not want them to roll. That can get ugly. Do not ask me how I know. ![]()

You lathe work is looking good. Take your time and enjoy. teleman my marks in math were high about three times higher than the marks in English. If you look over my posts I've used the edit button on almost ever one of them. LOL. Paddy Keep up the good work. Enjoy the learning on the lathe. Sometime make something just for the fun of it. ie not trying to follow a set of measured plans. Just cut free style to a general form that your heart likes. I'm really looking forward to turning that 42 Pounder Carronade in the “Smasher” project. I'm curious to see how turning that cannon in 1:16 scale will compare to the swivel gun. Hard not to go there now, even have the ebony block waiting, but I must press on with the Batteau. ![]() [ Edited Sun Mar 10 2013, 05:41pm ]
