I thought I'd go ahead and post it here since all my other posts are about unfinished model projects. This began as a hull from the Marine Models kit called 'The Slaver', a model of the Dos Amigos. The kit was actually purchase from North River Scale Models after Jim Roberts bought the line of the old Marine Models company and was trying to revive their kits before he passed away a short time later. This is a 3/16" scale model with details based primarily on plans by Howard Chapelle. I took the hull and planked the upper portion. While not ideal, I'd used cherry wood as I had a lot of it on hand at the time. The deck is planked with Lemonwood or Degame. Treenails in the deck are bamboo skewers. All the natural wood of the deck structures are cherry. I used blocks from Lloyd Warner and linen rigging line. Many of the lines I made on a crude, but effective rope walk and many are served. Belaying pins are from BlueJacket and the ship's boat is scratch built using a Model Shipways kit as a guide. Actually, the ship's boat was originally a Model Shipways kit, which turned out terrible. So, when I redid it, I just used the same plans. The hull is coppered using individual copper plates. These were heat treated to vary the color and to create an instant tarnish. Also, to kill the brightness of the copper, I'd gone over it all with a wash of black paint, which seemed to do the trick. Lastly, the flag is simply hand painted cloth. I contacted the Royal Navy Museum to clear up confusion on which flag to use. I also learned at this time how to paint a Royal Navy Ensign properly. Thanks for looking! This was a project from around 1999 to 2010 or so (there was a LONG break or two in the middle). I worked very hard on that model to try to be as accurate and to scale as I could, particularly on the rigging. This and an early model of the U.S. revenue cutter Dallas were my study subjects in learning about rigging details using Lees and other references, calculating what I think are proper line sizes and such. I've since set the model aside and pretty well forgotten about it. But, a couple weeks ago I was looking at cleaning it up and I started admiring the work I'd done in the past. I know I worked very hard on it and it's now serving to remind me to work hard on the projects I've got now. Clare

It's always something of a treat to look at old work and see what's good about it, how your work has improved, and what areas still need improvement.
