He uses plasticine for the sea and, if I remember correctly, his wife does the painting. If you do a search on the internet for "robert wilson miniature ships" you'll find lots of examples with really impressive sea (and the ships aren't bad either!) He publishes an e-book on how to build the models, I assume it includes modelling the sea.
Just found his website here. [ Edited Tue Nov 17 2015, 09:17am ]

Does the grain run longways on that piece of boxwood you've shaped for the carriage sides? If so I'll be interested to know whether the pieces hold together when you slice them off.

That question about the boxwood is in the wrong post! Only thing is I can't remember which one it should be in. I'll have to have a search through the recent posts.
Edit: OK, found it, this is the post I was replying to. [ Edited Fri Nov 20 2015, 10:44am ]

I have read a few books on the subject plasticine or plumbers putty and paint were mentioned. I test built a sea in the bottle easily enough but my problem was placing the ship into the sea. The books say put the boat in and press it into the sea. Easy to say hard to do. The boat is delicate and the sea is quite firm. Trying to push a boat into the plasticine using a piece of wire or even thin metal rod just bends the wire/rod as too much force was required. Even if I "carved' a divot for it to sit in the boat still needed to be pressed down into it and that was problematic. I have thought about putting the bottled sea into the oven to soften it but hav e not tried that yet.
