The Gun Boat Caustic - An online video practicum for building the Gun Boat Caustic, a model developed by The Lumberyard For Model Shipwrights (www.dlumberyard.com). This is a unique opportunity to see a new concept in online practicums. Watch as Dave Stevens takes you step by step through the process of building this gun boat in his 36 part video build log.
The Matthew Project - The Matthew was the ship on which explorer John Cabot sailed in 1497. Though hotly debated, it is suggested by some that John Cabot landed on mainland North America before Christopher Columbus. This model is based on Replicas built in Bonavista, Newfoundland, Bristol, England and scant historical information. The model is built using the POB method.
The Schooner Bluenose Practicum - In this practicum the modeler is taken through the process of building a 1:48 scale Plank-on-Frame model of this famous schooner. The model is based on the plans of Mr. Philip Eisnor. This is a joint project being conducted between Model Ship Builder and Navy Board Models. The main project itself was conducted at our Navy Board Models website.
The Battle Station - Originally an online build at our sister site Navy Board Models, the 1:32 scale Battle Station is a section build of a 17th century ship. It is now available to members from our download section. The project is in PDF format and includes the complete practicum and plans. This project will be of interest to novice builders wishing to try their hand at scratch building without having to take on a whole ship.
The HMS General Hunter - The General Hunter was built in 1806 at the British naval dockyard at Fort Malden near Amherstburg, Ontario Canada. In the Battle of Lake Erie in September 1813, she and five other ships were lost to the U.S. Navy. After the war her name was shortened to Hunter. In August of 1816 the ship ran into foul weather and ran abeach in what is now Southampton, Ontario. Nearly 200 years later her remains were uncovered on the Southampton beach where she lay covered in sand. This project encompases the building of a model of the General Hunter based on the archaeological findings of the wreck. Follow along in the forum area as we build the proto-type.
The Smasher - 42 Pounder Carronade - An interesting mini-project at a larger scale.
The Batteau - 1/2"-1' Scale - The batteau was a large, flat-bottomed skiff, sharp at both ends, over thirty feet long and six to eight feet wide in the middle, and capable of carrying about five tons. It was provided with masts and lug sails, with about fifteen feet hoist, an anchor, four oars and six setting-poles shod with iron and a crew of four men and a pilot. Many types of batteau were deployed during the War of 1812, with the largest capable of mounting small cannon or swivel guns. Large batteau with forty barrels of flour on board it drew only twenty inches of water. This was a very safe and adaptable vessel.
The US Brig Eagle (1814) - 1/4" - 1' scale model of the US Brig Eagle based on a Thesis by Prof. Kevin J. Crisman of Texas A & M university. This practicum by Gene Bodnar takes you through the full process of developing a model from scratch. Originally an online project at our other (now closed) website Navy Board Models. We are pleased to now make it available here in its entirity.
Bomb Vessel Cross Section - 1/4" scale plans or 1/2"=1' scale plans for the bomb vessel cross section model. Plans developed by Jeff Staudt.
